A new research article entitled “Visual Attention and Perceived Workload of E-Scooter Riders Across Selected Urban Route Conditions” has been published in the journal Sustainability!
The study investigated how different urban route conditions are associated with e-scooter riders’ visual attention and perceived workload under real-world riding conditions. Twenty-eight participants completed three selected routes in Zagreb with different infrastructure and traffic-environment characteristics. The experimental methodology combined eye-tracking using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 with the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) for assessing perceived workload.
The results showed significant route-related differences in both visual attention and perceived workload. Mean fixation duration differed across the selected routes, while perceived workload was lowest on the fully separated cycle route and highest on the on-road cycle lane alongside motorized traffic. The findings emphasize that infrastructure characteristics, traffic interactions, conflict points, proximity to motorized traffic, surface quality, and other route characteristics should be considered together when planning safer and more user-centred micromobility environments.
